Jack Campbell, Dan Campbell, Aidan Hutchinson share strong reactions to Lions' loss to Bills

The Detroit Lions fell to 1-1 on the season when they suffered a 41-31 loss at a Buffalo Bills (2-0) side that opened its new Highmark Stadium on Thursday night. 

Following the defeat, Lions All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell pointed the finger at himself for his team's Week 2 performance.

"I'm gonna be honest with you. Hats off to them; played terrible. It starts with me, and I feel like it's on me. I gotta be better," an emotional Campbell said, per Eric Woodyard of ESPN. "And I ain't got no other thing to do but look in the mirror and be better, so that's really where it starts. It starts with us, but yeah, they did a good job. ...Every time I lace up my cleats, I'm going 100%. Yeah, put it on me. I played terrible. I've gotta be better. Especially for the offense and for all these guys in the locker room."

Thursday's prime-time game wasn't quite as close as the final score would indicate. The Bills grabbed a 21-0 lead early into the second quarter and never looked back, while the Lions made the outcome appear more respectable thanks to an Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown that was scored with under two minutes remaining in regulation. 

Following the defeat, pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson acknowledged the Lions' defense was simply "not good enough" against the Bills. 

"Things will definitely be changed," Hutchinson continued. "I don't know what that is necessarily, but I know there will be changes. We're not going to keep banging our head against the wall."

What Dan Campbell told Lions after Week 2 loss

Against the Lions, Bills quarterback Josh Allen completed 20-of-31 passes for 248 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 69 yards and two scores on 14 carries. 

Meanwhile, Buffalo running back James Cook III rushed 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown just days after he committed a fumble against the Houston Texans that left him quite upset. 

"It wasn't good enough. That's not good enough, but like I told the guys, 'At least you know now.' At least we know what it looks like now," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. "It's a good team, playing good football, and now we know after two games, we kind of know who we are. We're figuring some stuff out."

One couldn't blame Dan Campbell if he is at least slightly concerned about his defense. From the start of the second half of their Week 1 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints through Thursday, the Lions surrendered 71 total points. 

"We’ve got a lot of room to grow, and that’s encouraging," Dan Campbell said, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "We’ve just got to clean up a lot of things on defense right now, particularly in the back end."

The events of Thursday night likely won't silence rumors linking the Lions with unsettled Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who seemingly isn't close to receiving a desired contract extension from Pittsburgh. 

As for the Lions, they will next host the New York Jets on Sept. 27. The 1-0 Jets host the 0-1 Green Bay Packers this coming Sunday afternoon. 

"It’s early, we’re in Week 2, we’ve got a long season, and the most important thing is that we get better," Dan Campbell added. "We just need to get better than we were today in all three phases. We need to play better against the Jets, and I think we will. We can, and we certainly will."
