Greg Schiano had an unhinged outburst toward ref on the sidelines

Greg Schiano went absolutely off the rails during a moment late in the third quarter of Saturday’s game between his Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the USC Trojans at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.

With the Trojans on 3rd-and-2 and 22 seconds left in the period, the broadcast briefly cut to Schiano, who looked livid at the referee.

Someone from the Rutgers staff had to hold back the 60-year-old Schiano, and it even got to the point where he inadvertently knocked the marker from a chain crew member’s hands after a swing that fortunately didn’t land on someone else.

It is a stressful time for Schiano and the Scarlet Knights. The eventual 42-35 loss to USC only adds to Rutgers’ headaches in the 2026 season, as Schiano’s team remains winless through three games.

This is Schiano’s seventh season as Rutgers head coach, and pressure is mounting to lead the team to some measure of success after the Scarlet Knights went 5-7 in 2025. Saturday’s defeat didn’t do him any favors.

Rutgers opened its season with a completely embarrassing 37-21 loss to the UMass Minutemen before suffering a 28-21 defeat at the hands of the Boston College Eagles.

Rutgers will try again on Sept. 25, when it hosts the Howard Bison.
