Indiana's eligibility news a huge boost heading into Northwestern game

The Indiana Hoosiers are looking to repeat as the college football national champions. That's a sentence that would have been unheard of even five years ago.

In 2026, it's a reality.

Repeating is hard, no matter the sport, but the 3-0 Hoosiers, ranked No. 5 in the nation, were gifted a massive eligibility win ahead of their Big Ten opener against the Northwestern Wildcats.

On Wednesday, a Monroe Circuit Court Judge ruled that two defensive linemen, Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt, are eligible to play in Week 4 against the Wildcats.

Daley and Wyatt were unable to play in Indiana's Week 3 win over Western Kentucky because the temporary restraining order that gave them a fifth year of eligibility had expired.

A hearing was held on Sept. 14, and earlier this week, Judge Kara Krothe ruled that Daley, Wyatt and several other athletes across college sports could play a fifth season based on the NCAA's new five-for-five rule.

"Under the plain terms of the 2026-27 NCAA Manual, they are eligible to compete, and the NCAA is breaching its contractual obligations by denying them that opportunity," Krothe wrote, per ESPN.

This is big news for Indiana as Curt Cignetti and his team look ahead to the 2-0 Wildcats. 

Northwestern can provide a test for Indiana Hoosiers in Big Ten opener 

Head coach David Braun has Northwestern playing good football, and this is absolutely a team that could threaten to topple the Hoosiers here in the early season. Especially with games against No. 7 Ohio State and No. 18 Michigan coming up quickly on Indiana's schedule, this has all the makings of a classic "trap game."

The Wildcats just tore apart the Colorado Buffaloes, 41-7, and quarterback Aidan Chiles is looking good. He's completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 514 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Chiles is also a bit of a dual-threat, having rushed for three touchdowns on the ground in this early season.

Braun's team can be dangerous for Indiana, so Cignetti and his staff regaining the services of Daley and Wyatt is big.

Speaking of big, Daley was third in all of FBS football with 19 tackles for loss last season. He also notched 5.5 sacks and 35 tackles. Wyatt notched 28 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 2025.

Getting that kind of production back right before the Big Ten opener will certainly benefit the Hoosiers, especially if Northwestern proves to be a tough opponent.
