What Syracuse is getting in five-star forward Moussa Kamissoko

Syracuse landed the first five-star commitment of Gerry McNamara's head-coaching career Friday when 2027 forward Moussa Kamissoko chose the Orange.

The commitment gives McNamara a major recruiting win as he continues rebuilding the Syracuse program. Kamissoko is ranked No. 15 in the 2027 SC Next 100 and becomes just the second five-star recruit to commit to Syracuse in the past decade.

Kamissoko has been a Syracuse target since his sophomore year, but the competition for the 6-foot-7 forward intensified following his strong summer with the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit. Florida State emerged as one of the Orange's biggest competitors before Syracuse ultimately held off the Seminoles, Illinois, Virginia, Oklahoma State and others.

The biggest appeal is Kamissoko's two-way potential. According to 247Sports' Adam Finkelstein, Kamissoko is a lanky wing with positional size, a 6-foot-11 wingspan and impressive open-floor speed. He has continued to develop as a shooter and ball-handler, shooting 35% from three and 70% from the free-throw line. He can attack with either hand, get to short mid-range shots and take advantage of smaller defenders.

His defensive potential could be just as important. Kamissoko averaged 1.9 steals and one block per game in the EYBL Scholastic as a junior while also averaging 7.2 rebounds. His length and movement skills give him the potential to guard multiple positions, while his activity on the glass adds another dimension to his game.

There are still areas of development. Physical defenders can knock him off his spots, and he can struggle when his initial offensive move is taken away. His passing also remains inconsistent, with 2.5 assists against 2.5 turnovers per game in the cited EYBL sample.

Syracuse's current roster is difficult to project this far ahead because of the transfer portal. The Orange already have several perimeter pieces with eligibility beyond this season, including Aiden Tobiason, Gavin Doty, Sadiq White Jr., Kiyan Anthony and Garwey Dual. Kamissoko would be another versatile piece with considerable upside.

His commitment also represents something bigger for McNamara's tenure. The new Syracuse coach inherited a roster that he had little time to reshape after taking the job, making it difficult to judge his recruiting ceiling from his first cycle. The Kamissoko commitment provides an early indication of what Syracuse could accomplish with a full recruiting calendar.
