'SNF' takeaways: Broncos pick off Matthew Stafford on final play to win thriller over Rams

The Los Angeles Rams led 16-0 at the halftime break and looked in complete control against the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. That all changed in a back-and-forth second half that culminated in a game-sealing interception in the end zone and a 30-26 win for the Broncos.

Here are four takeaways from a dramatic Sunday night affair.

Key takeaway: Broncos overcome another slow start to beat Rams

The Broncos have now trailed by double digits in the second half in each of their three games this season. For the first time in franchise history, they have now won back-to-back games when doing so and are now a league-best 11-4 since 2025 when trailing at halftime.

For most of the first half, it seemed like offensive coordinator Davis Webb could be ousted from his play-calling duties at any point after struggling to establish any rhythm. After 16 unanswered points and a 23-3 run to begin the second half, he changed that narrative for at least one night.

Even after Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford found wide receiver Konata Mumpfield for a 48-yard TD with 3:38 remaining, the Broncos marched down the field and scored the game-winning score on QB Bo Nix's one-yard TD run.

Nix only completed 17 of his 34 passes for 186 yards with two TDs and one interception, but this Broncos team made key play after key play and showed that they are never truly out of a game, even when the odds are stacked against them and nothing is going right offensively.

Game MVP: Talanoa Hufanga, safety, Denver Broncos

It is no secret that Denver's offense was not at its best against the Rams, but it did not have to be, with Hufanga completely taking over the game defensively. He delivered the final blow with the game-sealing pick of Stafford in the end zone as time expired.

That alone would have put him in consideration for the player of the game honors, but he also had a pick-six and a third-down sack in the fourth, putting his team on his back and coming away with multiple game-altering plays all the way down to the finish.

Play of the game: Pass-interference call on Rams CB Josh Wallace

After converting a 2nd-and-20 and advancing the ball all the way to the 11-yard-line, the Broncos appeared to be in prime position to pick up the win. The odds swung even more in their favor when the Rams CB was called for pass interference while covering Broncos WR Pat Bryant on the sideline.

Moments after the penalty, NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay disagreed with the call and did not believe that Wallace should have been flagged for pass interference. Since Wallace appeared to remarkably get both feet down in bounds, the Rams would have taken over up three with just over one minute remaining.

Nonetheless, the Broncos eventually punched it in the end zone a few plays later and found a way to escape with a massive win over the Rams. The pass interference call, though, was a huge turning point that late in the game and one that likely would have produced a much different outcome if it had been called differently.

Quote of the night: "How did they do that?!"

NBC Sports' color commentator Cris Collinsworth likely echoed the thoughts of many fans watching Sunday night's game when Nix somehow found wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in the back of the end zone for this remarkable two-point conversion to make it a one-score game midway through the third quarter.

That followed a five-yard TD pass from Nix to Bryant that finally put the Broncos on the board. It took them two-and-a-half quarters to do so, but the throw and ability from Waddle to get both feet down certainly provided a spark that was nonexistent until then.
