Giants make shocking decision on Vikings' J.J. McCarthy after struggles of Jameis Winston

A recent report suggested that the New York Giants would not make a trade for Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy after Giants starter Jaxson Dart went down with a knee injury that will keep him out of action through at least the rest of the regular season.

It appears the situation changed after temporary Giants QB1 Jameis Winston left much to be desired with his play in two straight games. 

What did it cost the Giants to get J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings?

On Monday afternoon, NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN revealed that the Giants are sending a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Vikings for McCarthy. McCarthy played under current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh when those two were at Michigan. McCarthy will now be tasked with continuing his development under first-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh, Jim's brother. 

A 2024 first-round draft choice, McCarthy spent his entire rookie season recovering from a full meniscus repair. After he made just 10 starts for the Vikings during the 2025 campaign, Minnesota signed Kyler Murray this past March. Murray was ultimately named the winner of the competition for the Vikings' QB1 gig before the club's first preseason game in August, and McCarthy was eventually relegated to QB3 duties beneath Carson Wentz.

McCarthy may now receive an opportunity to jump-start his career with a Giants team that has some uncertainty regarding the future of its quarterback situation. 

What could J.J. McCarthy trade mean for Jaxson Dart?

On paper, McCarthy is not a plug-and-play option for any team. After Winston completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards and no touchdown drives in an ugly 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans (0-3) that improved Big Blue to 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, John Harbaugh confirmed that the veteran will get the nod for the Giants' Week 4 home game versus the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 4. 

However, the fact that the Giants were willing to give up a draft asset for McCarthy would indicate that John Harbaugh, the team's true head of football operations, may want to get a look at the 23-year-old if the once promising prospect can quickly familiarize himself with the Big Blue playbook. Presumably, McCarthy could be given a chance to compete with Dart for the Giants' QB1 gig next summer if the former flips a figurative switch and plays well for his new employer during the second half of the ongoing campaign. 

Thus far, Dart has made just 14 regular-season starts since the Giants selected him in the first round of the 2025 draft.
