Canadiens end Maple Leafs' 10-game home-opening win streak

Josh Anderson and Alexandre Carrier each had a goal and an assist for the visiting Montreal Canadiens Tuesday in their 3-2 opening-night victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Zachary Bolduc also scored for the Canadiens while Jakub Dobes stopped 26 shots despite giving up a goal in the first minute.

William Nylander scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who had their 10-game home-opening winning streak snapped.

Sergei Bobrovsky, an offseason pickup, made 21 saves for the Maple Leafs.

Nylander opened the scoring at 0:48 of the first period with a quick shot from the right circle. Kirill Marchenko, obtained in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, earned an assist as did Morgan Rielly.

Toronto dominated the early going and Dobes was forced to stop a shot from the left circle by Auston Matthews.

The Canadiens worked themselves back into the game and were hemming in the Maple Leafs in their own zone. They were rewarded when Anderson tied the game at 10:53 of the first, batting in the puck on a shot from the slot by Carrier.

Montreal took a 2-1 lead at 4:52 of the second period after Mike Matheson stormed down the left boards, shrugged off Nylander and set up Bolduc for an 18-foot wrist shot. Anderson also picked up an assist.

Toronto perked up early in the third and Dobes made a big save on Nylander.

Montreal came close to extending the lead at 8:04 of the third during a power play but Juraj Slafkovsky had his 28-footer ring off the right goal post.

The Maple Leafs then had a chance on the power play with Dobes handling both shots during the two minutes.

Carrier put Montreal into a 3-1 lead at 13:12 of the third with an unassisted goal when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic past a screened Bobrovsky. Carrier also had been a standout killing off penalties.

Nylander cut into the lead at 15:46 when he finished a give-and-go with Easton Cowan.
