Ailing defense puts pressure on Panthers QB Bryce Young entering 'SNF' Lions showdown

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young may need to have the game of his life to keep up with the Detroit Lions this Sunday.

Ahead of the Week 4 prime-time showdown, the Panthers officially placed starting corners Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) on injured reserve on Wednesday, leaving the secondary thin against an explosive Lions offense.

If Carolina is to keep pace and notch a statement win against a quality opponent, it will need Young at his sharpest. Coming off his worst game of the young season, the league's passing yards leader will have to turn the page in a hurry.

Bryce Young must carry Panthers against Lions with defense hampered by injuries

During Sunday's 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns, Horn suffered a torn quad during the fourth quarter, while Jackson left with a groin injury after only 15 snaps. Wednesday's transaction placing both on short-term injured reserve was a formality, but it reinforces the pressure on Young heading into the "Sunday Night Football" showdown.

With Horn and Jackson out, Carolina has three healthy corners on its active roster. The Panthers also have four cornerbacks on their practice squad after signing five-year veteran Robert Rochell in a corresponding move Wednesday.

Akayleb Evans, who has only played 27 coverage snaps this season, and rookie fourth-rounder Will Lee III are expected to start at outside corner against the Lions, and they'll have their hands full against Lions wideouts Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. With the Panthers rush defense the league's worst through three weeks, the pair may often find themselves on islands while safeties Nick Scott and Tre'von Moehrig preoccupy themselves with stopping running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Carolina's defense has settled in nicely over the past two weeks, but memories of an ugly Week 1 performance in a 59-37 home loss to the Chicago Bears should still be fresh in the unit's mind. Unlike when facing Atlanta Falcons third-string quarterback Cooper Rush or Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, Lions quarterback Jared Goff may be able to better exploit the Panthers' deficiencies.

Young, who completed a season-low 54.2 percent of his passes in the Week 3 loss at Cleveland and had his own knee injury scare, must be on his A-game with the secondary ailing. Fortunately for the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, Detroit's defense may oblige.

While Young leads the league in passing, the Lions are last in pass defense, allowing a tick under 300 yards (299.3) through the air per game. He'll need a big game to likely keep pace in what projects to be a high-scoring affair. As of Wednesday, the game's 51.5 over-under point total is tied for the largest of Week 4.

Young must certainly be better than he's been previously in prime time. In three previous regular-season night games with Young at quarterback, the Panthers went 0-3 and averaged 13 points and 227.3 yards per game. The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner was 61-of-100 for 507 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

A high-leverage game like Sunday could go a long way in determining Young's long-term future. He's under contract through 2027 after the Panthers picked up his fifth-year option during the offseason, but anything beyond that is uncertain. Carolina needs to see Young perform at his best when the lights are brightest, and Sunday provides an opportunity for him to do just that.

Few players might be under more pressure than Young this weekend. If he delivers, the Panthers may feel a lot better about their future.
