Shortly after the New York Giants agreed to acquire quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this week, first-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh hinted that the door could be open for McCarthy to soon replace veteran Jameis Winston atop the club's depth chart.
Of course, Winston is only in the lineup this fall because New York starter Jaxson Dart went down in Week 2 with a knee injury that will keep him out of action through at least the rest of the regular season. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Winston was asked whether he felt "challenged or disrespected" by the fact that the Giants got McCarthy so soon after Dart suffered his setback.
"I feel challenged to get better every single day," Winston responded, per the Giants' website. "I just think that's the makeup of who I am as a person, always looking for ways to build on the positives and eliminate the negatives. You hear me say this a lot. No matter the circumstances, conditions, or facts, my mind is on what my heart desires, and that's to be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback."
Winston completed 25 of 49 total passes (51 percent) for 229 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in his two outings following the Dart injury. While the Giants are 2-1 heading into this coming Sunday's home game against the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals, the Big Blue offense hasn't produced a single touchdown drive without Dart.
"I have to play well regardless," Winston said about possibly holding onto the QB1 gig beyond the Arizona contest. "It doesn't matter who's in the building. When you're the quarterback for the New York Football Giants, you have to give your team a chance to win, and that's just the business that we're in."
The reported "best-case scenario for the Giants" is that Winston will play well enough while earning wins to keep McCarthy sidelined for the foreseeable future. Regardless of Winston's performances, he is now tasked with serving as a mentor for a young signal-caller who needs a bit of a reset after being discarded by the team that made him a first-round pick during the 2024 NFL Draft.
"I think he's a good kid, and I'm happy to have anyone that's my teammate," Winston added about McCarthy. "...He's curious. He wants to be great. I think anybody that gets the opportunity to come to a new organization with a fresh start wants to make an impact."
It remains to be seen whether or not McCarthy will have an impact on the Giants as a starting quarterback later this fall.
