White Sox vs Guardians: Breaking down the 2026 season series

As if 13 regular-season meetings weren't enough, the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians will meet up for at least three more games in the ALDS beginning on Saturday.

Despite the Guardians winning the AL Central, the White Sox took the season series, winning seven of 13 games. It was an extremely tightly contested season series, with 11 of the 13 games being decided by three runs or fewer.

Let's dive into the season series and look to see which players are rolling into the ALDS with a lot of confidence due to regular-season success.

What did the season series between Chicago and Cleveland tell us about the White Sox?

Third baseman Miguel Vargas was the lead contributor against Cleveland, as he slashed .304/.424/.565, good for an OPS of .989 with three doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and 11 walks.

Designated hitter Randal Grichuk also feasted on White Sox pitching, slashing .344/.333/.688, good for an OPS of 1.021 with one triple, two home runs, three doubles and four RBI.

From a pitching perspective, it was right-hander Sean Burke who was stellar against Cleveland. Burke made three starts, posting a 1.04 ERA with 21 strikeouts across 17 1/3 innings pitched.

What did the season series between Chicago and Cleveland tell us about the Guardians?

For the Guardians offense, it was the usual production from outfielder Steven Kwan and third baseman Jose Ramirez against the White Sox.

In 42 at-bats, Kwan slashed .357/.460/.500, good for an OPS of .960 with one double, one triple, one home run, two RBI and eight walks. Ramirez had just 20 at-bats against Chicago and hit .300 with two doubles, two RBI, two walks and four stolen bases.

On the mound for Cleveland, left-hander Parker Messick did solid work against Chicago. He made four starts, posting a 2.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts across 25 2/3 innings.

Hunter Gaddis also did excellent work out of the bullpen, posting a 1.23 ERA with eight strikeouts across seven appearances and 7 1/3 innings pitched.

What will decide the winner of this series?

Clutch hitting will ultimately decide the team that advances to the ALCS, as the regular season series showed that these two teams can each win close games against one another.

The team that doesn't let the moment get too big and can come up with clutch hits in late-game situations will be the team that gets one step closer to playing in the World Series.
