It's been an eventful season for Kyle Whittingham and his Michigan Wolverines in 2026... and not exactly in a good way, either.
After nearly opening the season with an embarrassing loss to Western Michigan that will remain controversial, the Wolverines have once again found themselves in the spotlight for less-than-flattering reasons.
On the heels of a 20-19 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan hit a new low on Saturday, losing 20-14 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
With problems at quarterback and a host of other issues, Whittingham admitted after the game that he may be facing the most trying time of his long-tenured career, which has lasted over 40 years.
Five games into the season, he was still "trying to figure out" the identity of this team and where it's truly at.
"I've been in this profession 40-some years, and this is the biggest challenge I've had," Whittingham said in his postgame press conference. "I promise you we're going to figure it out."
And that will be easier said than done as Whittingham moves forward in his first season as Michigan's head man.
The biggest storyline of this game was quarterback Bryce Underwood's performance, and whether it is time to turn to Tommy Carr yet. Underwood finished his latest appearance with a completion rate under 50%, passing for 101 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions.
He's now thrown five interceptions, which is also as many touchdowns as he has this season, while completing less than 60% of his passes.
While Whittingham wasn't clear about what he would do about Underwood, it certainly seems the writing is on the wall for the sophomore.
"We might have to make some tough decisions here," Whittingham stated after the game. "Right now, to this point, through this portion of the season, it's unacceptable. The results are unacceptable right now."
