Panthers stuck in anxious waiting game to learn severity of Aleksander Barkov injury

The return of a healthy Aleksander Barkov was supposed to be one of the biggest factors in the Florida Panthers being a top Stanley Cup contender for the 2026-27 NHL season.

Just one game into their season, there is some serious concern that he is going to miss significant time for the second year in a row.

They just do not know how much, and it is an anxious waiting game until they find out for certain.

Panthers place Aleksander Barkov on LTIR, but do not yet know severity of injury

Barkov exited the team's season-opener this week with a left knee injury that did not look good when it happened.

The team reportedly placed him on the long-term injured list on Saturday, which means he will have to miss a minimum of 10 games.

They are still waiting for official word on the severity of the injury, but ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported there is some optimism that it is not going to be season-ending.

That still does not sound overly promising for a quick return.

Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season due to a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered during training camp. His absence played a major role in the Panthers missing the playoffs after winning back-to-back Stanley Cups, and appearing in three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals.

His injury was just one of many significant injury concerns for the Panthers a year ago, but it was easily the most significant.

Now he has an issue with his left knee.

He is not only the Panthers' best overall player; he is one of the best two-way players in the league, blending top-line scoring production with Selke Trophy-caliber defense at center.

If there is a positive for the Panthers this season, it is that their roster right now is healthier than it was a year ago, while they also had a big offseason that saw them bring in forward Brady Tkachuk and overhaul their goalie position with Jacob Markstrom replacing Sergei Bobrovsky.

Even with all of that being the case, they need Barkov if they are going to make another run at a Stanley Cup. At this point, it seems like he could be back this season, but until they get an official word on when (or if) that is, it is going to be an anxious time for the coaching staff, locker room and organization.
