Many Broncos fans want HC Sean Payton to strip OC Davis Webb of play-calling after 2-2 start; what do the stats say?

Is it time for Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton to strip offensive coordinator Davis Webb of play-calling duties?

The Broncos are 2-2 following another sluggish offensive performance in a 24-14 Week 4 road loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Asked postgame if he would yank the play sheet from Webb, Payton waffled.

"It's too early to [consider]. It's a fair question. I appreciate it," Payton said. "It's tough to discuss any of that right now."

Payton is clearly wrestling with whether he should make a change before a Week 5 road game against the Los Angeles Chargers (0-4) (CBS, 4:05 p.m. ET). Perhaps looking at the stats would clarify the answer.

How do the 2026 Broncos compare to the 2025 Broncos after Week 4?

To assess whether the offense has regressed under Webb, let's examine the Broncos' stats through Denver's first four games in 2026 and 2025. We'll use points per game, yards per attempt and yards per carry. The 2026 numbers include the team's league rank entering Monday.

2025 2026
24 PPG
18.5 PPG (No. 26 in NFL)
6.3 YPA
6.1 YPA (No. 28 in NFL)
5.1 YPC
3.6 YPC (No. 27 in NFL)

Jeez, those numbers are awful, especially the YPC. Granted, it's a small sample size. Plus, the Broncos have had a much more competitive schedule thus far than they did in 2025.

In Weeks 1-4 in 2025, the Broncos played the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals. L.A., surprisingly, is the only team that made the playoffs last season.

This season, Denver has faced the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0), Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1), L.A. Rams (2-2) and the 49ers (4-0). Excluding the Chiefs, all were playoff teams in 2025, and each looks like an early Super Bowl contender in 2026 after posting a combined 13-3 record.

Denver's sloppy offensive execution compounded its problems in those matchups. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix admitted postgame that the unit must operate more efficiently for the rest of the season.

"So, we're just not making it easy on [Webb] by any means right now," the QB said. (h/t Mike Klis of KUSA-TV in Denver). "We just have to help him."

The Broncos do need to help Webb, but he also must design plays that help players find their groove. Through four games, it appears he doesn't know how. Payton, a Super Bowl champion, does.

Payton may want to give Webb a little more time to get the hang of play-calling, but he'd better do so fast. The Broncos have Super Bowl aspirations after going 14-3 and making the AFC Championship Game last season. Denver can't keep hoping Webb proves he's an offensive genius, especially when they already have a HC who is.
