The Portland Trail Blazers are currently housing one of the league's most fascinating storylines this season with regard to their clear logjam in the backcourt. Their plan for All-Star guard Ja Morant is especially interesting to watch, as their partnership with him could very well end up being a brief one despite having just traded for him this summer.
As reported by NBA insider Jake Fischer, the sentiment among executives around the league is that Portland is planning on rehabbing the trade value of Morant to the effect that they can eventually dangle him for assets.
As good as Morant is, it has been more than three years since he was an All-Star caliber player. Off-court issues and injuries have prevented him from returning to the level he reached in his early peak with the Grizzlies. Currently, his trade value is at its lowest, especially now that his role with the Trail Blazers remains a huge question mark.
New head coach Micah Nori is reportedly not a fan of the proposition that Morant should be starting next to franchise icon Damian Lillard this season, apparently deeming the idea as a nonsensical one. If so, a move to the bench will most definitely water down his value, even though it could end up paying dividends for Portland.
Rehabbing Morant's trade value in that regard would be more difficult. However, the more important thing is the fact that they are actually testing the waters, which means that the former All-Star is already in the hot seat right from the get go.
For now, no one knows how this unusual saga could end. But if there is one thing clear, it is that Ja Morant finds himself in a peculiar situation, and the Trail Blazers seem to be angling to do something about the tricky dynamic they have going on.
