Texans bring back former Cowboys RB after cutting him in preseason

The Houston Texans signed three players to their practice squad on Wednesday, the same day DeMeco Ryans announced he was taking back defensive play-calling for his 0-4 team.

Two of the additions are defenders brought in behind injured starters, and the third is a running back Houston cut before the season began.

Linebacker Chad Muma, defensive back Jaden Davis and running back Deuce Vaughn are joining the practice squad ahead of Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville.

Jacksonville drafted Muma in the third round in 2022 out of Wyoming, and he spent three seasons with the Jaguars and split last season between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots.

In 58 career games, he has seven starts, 103 tackles and 1.5 sacks, which makes him the most experienced of the three. He was a free agent when Houston called.

Azeez Al-Shaair is dealing with a groin injury and Kenneth Murray has a concussion, which leaves the linebacker room short two starters. Muma gives Ryans a veteran he can elevate on game days while both work their way back.

In the secondary, cornerback Jaylin Smith went to injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Davis, a 2024 seventh-round pick out of Miami who spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, fills that depth spot. He has three career games, all last season, with three tackles.

Deuce Vaughn's second stint in Houston this year

Vaughn has already been in Houston once this year. He spent less than a week with the Texans in the preseason before they cut him days ahead of the roster deadline.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted the former Kansas State star in the sixth round in 2023, and he has since spent time with the Denver Broncos and the UFL's Orlando Storm.

His NFL production is limited to 14 games with Dallas, with 110 rushing yards on 40 carries and 10 catches for 58 yards. He has also returned punts in the NFL. The RB room he joins already includes David Montgomery, Woody Marks, Dare Ogunbowale and Jawhar Jordan (practice squad), with British Brooks on injured reserve, so his clearest route onto a game-day roster is as a returner.

Houston also lost a defensive back this week. Cornerback Alijah Huzzie, who had been with the Texans since 2025 but was on the practice squad after not making the 53-man roster this summer, signed with the Jaguars.

The Texans and Jaguars will meet in London come Week 6, the first game after the Titans trip, and Huzzie will be with Jacksonville after more than a year inside Houston's defense, the same unit Ryans declares he’ll be calling moving forward.
