It was learned this past weekend that Washington Commanders starting quarterback Jayden Daniels was on track to return to the club's lineup for Washington's home game versus the rival New York Giants (3-1) this coming Sunday.
Daniels hasn't played since he suffered a dislocated left elbow on Sept. 20. While speaking with reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn shared an update regarding how Daniels will prepare for the Giants game.
Per Mitchell Tischler of Monumental Sports Network, Quinn revealed that the Commanders plan to "work on some things in practice this week to further help" Daniels protect his injured elbow.
Daniels dislocated the same elbow last season, and he made just seven total starts before he was shut down after he aggravated the injury. He is now expected to wear a protective brace on the elbow during games through the remainder of the ongoing campaign.
"The outlook for the Commanders' Jayden Daniels potentially playing this week against the Giants is positive," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported earlier on Wednesday. "The key, I'm told, is having him in practice in full. Limited participation likely won't be enough. If he's a full go in practice by, say, Friday, he'll get the green light."
Meanwhile, Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered an MCL sprain during the club's 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in London this past Sunday. According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, Mariota will not go on injured reserve and could be available for the Commanders in two to three weeks.
Washington has a Week 6 "Monday Night Football" game at the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 19. After that, the Commanders will spend Week 7 on the bye.
Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis is currently on track to serve as Washington's QB2 versus New York. Against the Colts, he completed 15-of-33 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Meanwhile, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Commanders as 3.5-point home favorites over the Giants as of Wednesday afternoon.
