Alex Cora may be holding out for the ultimate heel turn.
The former Boston Red Sox manager Cora reportedly turned down the Philadelphia Phillies manager job for a second time this week. Cora instead intends to sit out of the 2027 MLB season entirely.
However, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported this week that Cora may still be eyeing a different MLB job — the manager job of the New York Yankees. Heyman notes that the Yankees are believed to be the one team that would possibly have a chance of luring Cora back into the dugout.
The Yankees are currently managed by Aaron Boone, who just completed his ninth season as their manager. But the Yankees got swept out of the ALDS this year by the rival Tampa Bay Rays, seemingly increasing the pressure on Boone and his job status.
For now, the Yankees still appear to be committed to the 53-year-old Boone. However, Boone will be entering the final season of his contract with the team in 2027.
A move to New York would certainly be quite the twist for Cora, who managed the Boston Red Sox for seven-and-a-half seasons and also spent time with the Red Sox during his playing career. But Boston did notably fire Cora in April of this year, and that would definitely be one heck of a way for the 50-year-old Cora to get his revenge.
