When it’s all said and done, Ben Johnson wants to be amongst the greatest coaches in Chicago Bears history. One name he is chasing is the legendary Mike Ditka.

Over his 11 years as head coach, the Bears went 106-62 under Ditka. They won the only Super Bowl under his watch during Chicago’s unforgettable 1985 season. Furthermore, Ditka was named Coach of the Year twice.

While Johnson led the Bears to an NFC North title in his debut, he still has plenty of mountains to climb before he is considered in Ditka’s tier. Still, Chicago’s head coach has generated a winning culture the franchise hasn’t seen in many years.

Once he interviewed with the Bears, Johnson new he wanted the head coaching job. Part of the appeal was the franchise history. A legacy that couldn’t be told without mentioning Ditka’s name.

Anyone who takes the Bears head coaching job understands the expectations that will be placed on their shoulders. Chicago has been searching for a leader who can emulate Ditka’s vision and success.

On Friday, it was announced that Ditka passed away at 86-years-old. The Bears new head coach made sure to pay his respects to an icon who practically paved the path he now walks on, via CHGO.

“As far as I’m concerned, Coach Ditka is the gold standard in terms of this place,” Johnson said. “He’s a legend around here as a player, as a coach. His impact is still being felt to this day, and as the head coach of the Bears, I feel humbled to be in that same chair he was once in. It’s a sad day.”

Maybe Johnson will decide to honor Ditka by wearing one of his signature vests. Ultimately though, a win over the Green Bay Packers may speak louder.
