It's pretty shocking to be heading into Week 5 and know that the Los Angeles Chargers haven't won a single game yet. Second-year coach Jim Harbaugh hasn't been able to turn this ship around, and it looks even worse for first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
This team needs to win, and fast. Now, McDaniel is getting a warning of sorts from one NFL analyst about his time in Los Angeles.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report released a feature on Friday with NFL coaching predictions, and McDaniel is being put on notice. He points out a few problems with this team's offense, too.
For one, Knox says that the Chargers haven't won a game because they're 21st in yards and 29th in scoring in the league. But he also says that the "bigger issue is that quarterback Justin Herbert seems to have regressed in McDaniel's system." You can't have a quarterback who's getting worse under the team's offensive coordinator.
"Herbert has thrown just four touchdowns with six interceptions," Knox adds. "He also holds a 70.6 passer rating, by far the worst of his career and nearly 25 points below his career average."
Knox says that if Harbaugh decides he needs to start fresh, he could have passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shane Day step in for McDaniel because he has experience with Herbert. Even though Day hasn't done a ton of play-calling, "he has a strong grasp of what has traditionally worked for Herbert and the Chargers," Knox adds.
