Pistons swung for the stars this offseason but have nothing to show for it

The Detroit Pistons, owners of the best record in the East last season, are bringing back largely the same squad in 2026-27. Interestingly though, as it turns out, their front office reportedly attempted to lure in some blockbuster additions this summer, only to fumble the bag on all of their sterling targets.

According to ESPN's Vincent Goodwill, the Pistons reached out about both Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard this offseason on a potential trade, which obviously did not work out. KD went on to stay in Houston while Leonard got sent back to Toronto in controversial fashion.

Detroit was also rumored to have expressed strong interest in tendering an offer to Austin Reaves, but the Lakers quickly prevented that from happening.

Pistons missed out on all of their targets this offseason

The Pistons brought in new solid contributors, but none of their additions can possibly hope to measure up to their rumored initial targets. As a result, Detroit's brass had no other choice but to stick with their current nucleus, which included Jalen Duren, who had a pretty rough push and pull with the front office on his contract extension.

Detroit will once again be considered as a strong player in the East and probably even as a title contender. However, repeating its top finish in the conference this season will be highly difficult given that its rivals have all loaded up while it largely stayed put.

Cade Cunningham will still be the Pistons' main gunner, but as can be gleaned from their playoff run, they badly needed a second option who can go get a bucket when needed. Right now, they still do not have that player, so a collective attack will be the way for them for now.

The Pistons have never been a premier destination for free agents nor a typical landing spot for top trade candidates, but as long as they remain consistent as a winning squad, those should change sooner than later. Until then, all they can do is to keep building around their promising core.
