Curt Cignetti questioned for strange decision against Nebraska

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti did not earn much praise for a bizarre decision he made in the fourth quarter of the Hoosiers’ comeback win over Nebraska.

Cignetti’s scoreboard management drew criticism after he opted to kick an extra point instead of going for two after the Hoosiers scored to pull within five of the Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday. Initially, Cignetti sent the offense out to go for two, which would have brought the Hoosiers within 17-14 if successful. After Nebraska called timeout, Cignetti sent the kicker on, which made it 17-13.

The extra point left the Hoosiers in essentially the same spot they would have faced had they failed to convert the two-point conversion. They could not tie the game with a field goal, leaving them in need of a second touchdown to take the lead.

Indiana did successfully complete the comeback with another touchdown for a 20-17 win, but his game management was still questioned throughout the afternoon. Of course, he wound up putting a win on the board, so the criticism wound up quite muted.

The Hoosiers still have not lost since falling to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff on December 31, 2024. Saturday was one of their closer calls, but they held on.
