This was not a good week for the NFC East.
The division went winless despite the fact that two of its teams (the New York Giants and Washington Commanders) were playing against one another.
After the Dallas Cowboys were embarrassed at home against a previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers team on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles had a special teams and game-management meltdown in their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday morning.
All of that, however, was only the appetizer for the feast of incompetence that the Giants and Commanders served up in overtime of their 27-27 tie on Sunday afternoon. It was a tie that ended with the most egregious display of clock mismanagement that you will ever see in the NFL.
Giants running back Cam Skattebo, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and Commanders head coach Dan Quinn are all going to be having nightmares about this game for the next week.
After the Giants erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to get the game into overtime, both teams went out of their way to try and lose the game in as many bizarre ways as possible.
Overtime began with the Giants missing a field goal on their opening drive, giving Washington a chance to win it with a field goal of its own.
But after a three-and-out and a punt, the Giants again found themselves with a chance to win. They drove all the way down to the Washington 29-yard line. Then, with the Giants trying to secure better field position for a field goal, Skattebo fumbled, giving Washington an opportunity to win the game.
Washington then effortlessly marched down the field to the New York 26-yard line in the closing seconds.
Then this happened.
A WILD ENDING IN WASHINGTON!

With no timeouts remaining, the Commanders can't spike the ball before time expires, and the game ends in a tie!

The Commanders, for reasons that will be a mystery to any rational-thinking football fan, decided to try and run a play, with Daniels eventually giving himself up as the clock ticked away. The Commanders had no timeouts and were powerless to stop the clock as it ran out, sending Giants players into a bizarre sense of celebration and Quinn smashing his headset in disgust.
It is on him.
It is on Daniels.
It is on everybody.
Everybody has to have more awareness of the situation, and nobody really even seemed concerned about what was happening for several seconds as the clock ticked away.
Ultimately, that still has to fall on the head coach. He has to make his quarterback aware of what he can and can not do. He has to make his players aware. He needs to make a better decision in putting his players in a position to succeed.
Why is he even running an offensive play there? A field goal would have ended the game. Even if there is time remaining on the clock, the Giants do not get another possession due to the NFL's overtime rules. The reward in trying to get closer or trying to set up a specific hashmark for his kicker is not worth the risk without a timeout. You saw here why that is the case.
The Commanders are now just 6-15-1 since going to the NFC Championship Game in Quinn's first season. If his seat was not already hot, it should be scorching after that display of football.
