Steelers have found a successful recipe on offense — if they stick with it

After two games, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense looked every bit as miserable as it has over the past few years. It was a major concern.

But over the past three weeks, including Sunday's 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts, they have started to find a recipe that works. They have averaged 28.6 per game during that stretch, winning two of them against AFC opponents.

While quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going to get a lot of the attention and praise for throwing three touchdowns in each game, it's all about who he is utilizing, and how the Steelers are utilizing them.

The recipe: a lot of Jaylen Warren and a lot of the tight ends.

Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth are the winning formula for Steelers offense

Coming into Sunday's game, there were two big areas where the Steelers offense had excelled this season.

They were one of the league's best offenses when lining up under center and were also one of the most explosive offenses in the running game in terms of how many big plays they could create.

It makes a lot of sense when you realize Warren is their best offensive playmaker, and they have two outstanding tight ends in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington who can impact the game in both the passing game and rushing game as blockers.

Warren has been the biggest playmaker and has the ability to score every time he touches the ball, from anywhere on the field. He had 188 all-purpose yards in Sunday's win on 21 touches (8.9 yards per touch), including two touchdowns.

The touchdowns were an 80-yard reception in the first quarter and a 50-yard run in the third quarter. The 188 yards were a new personal best, topping the mark he set two weeks when he had 176 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

When he touches the football, good things generally happen for the Steelers.

It has been the case for several years now, and both the previous coaching staff and current coaching staff have not fully taken advantage of it.

Warren is making it impossible for them to ignore him much longer.

Along with that, Freiermuth and Washington need to be even more involved than they already are. Freiermuth caught two touchdown passes on Sunday, while Washington was a force of a run-blocker who helped Warren break out for some of his biggest plays. Lining up under center also opens more of the play action passing game that becomes even more effective with good tight ends and as the running game continues to improve.

The Steelers do not have the wide receiver depth (or the quality) to play the type of shotgun, downfield passing game that head coach Mike McCarthy and Rodgers might prefer. Their best players are their running back and their two tight ends. The past three weeks everything has started to move through them. The results are following.

Sometimes, you have to throw out your predetermined plans, your long-time scheme or what you found success with in the past. Sometimes, you just need to line up and focus on what your players actually do best. For this Steelers team? It is Jaylen Warren and Pat Freiermuth.
