Christopher Bell was given the green light to race hard and track down Chase Briscoe on the final lap of Sunday's Bank of America 400 at Charlotte after saving fuel over the race's final run.
It nearly resulted in a win, but in the end, Briscoe beat him to the checkered flag by 0.029 seconds after the two made contact on the exit of the final corner.
"I got a lot closer than I thought I was going to," a dejected Bell told USA Network. "We should be really good at the next couple races. Hopefully we can keep bringing these fast race cars."
Bell is third in the series standings after Sunday's race, 51 points back of leader Kyle Larson with four races left in the season. Had he come out victorious, he'd only be 31 points behind Larson going into the Oct. 18 race at Phoenix.

Bell finally got off the losing skid by winning the Southern 500 at Darlington on Sept. 6, but not before finishing runner-up a whopping seven times through the first 26 races of the season. Sunday's second-place result is his eighth of 2026, and given the championship implications, arguably the most heartbreaking.
Bell should be in contention to win at Phoenix, Martinsville and Homestead to close the season. Talladega on Oct. 25 is anyone's guess. But if Bell is unable to win the title, his inability to close out races, especially on Sundays, will loom very large for the No. 20 team over the offseason.
