New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo presented the rival Washington Commanders with a gift when he committed a fumble in overtime as the Giants were on the verge of attempting what could have become a game-winning field goal.
However, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels then shockingly failed to properly manage the clock and ultimately prevented the hosts from attempting a field goal in the game's closing seconds. On Monday, Mike Sando of The Athletic spoke with an unnamed NFL game management coach about whether Daniels or Washington head coach Dan Quinn was more to blame for what occurred at the end of Sunday's matchup.
"Decisions made in real time are seldom perfect, but I can assure you of one thing: Dan Quinn and his staff told the quarterback no sack or scramble," the coach told Sando. "You can't do that. You throw it away, and if you have eight seconds, throw it away again, get it to four seconds. There are three errors by the quarterback: scrambling, taking the sack and not getting up fast."
As the coach mentioned, the Commanders had no timeouts in hand when Daniels snapped the football at the Giants' 24-yard line with 13 seconds remaining in overtime. He ran around before he dove to the ground with eight seconds left, and he was then unable to spike the ball before the clock ran out.

"You want to get the ball to the correct hash for the kicker, and you don't really care about gaining yards at that point," the coach added. "You want to finish the play and go into your quarterback spike so the field goal is the last play of the game."
For an article posted late Sunday night, NFL reporter Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports shared a different take regarding the tie that put Washington at 1-3-1 on the season.
"It doesn’t matter that Daniels should’ve known better," Vacchiano wrote. "His coach can’t let that happen. Quinn had to have his team better prepared in that situation and know exactly what to do."
Vacchiano added that "Quinn’s seat is hotter than ever" following what happened at Washington's Northwest Stadium on Sunday. Things won't get any easier for the Commanders in Week 6, as they'll play a "Monday Night Football" game at the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 19.
As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Washington as a 7.5-point road underdog for that contest.
