After another season ended without a World Series Championship, the New York Yankees have several important decisions to make as they prepare for the offseason.
One of those decisions is deciding who and who not to extend the $23.15 million qualifying offer to. It appears that the Yankees have made that decision on two players and the decision is not the same for both.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, New York is expected to extend a qualifying offer to closer David Bednar, but not to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Bednar had an excellent season, collecting 35 saves while posting a 2.47 ERA with 76 strikeouts across 64 appearances and 69 1/3 innings pitched.
Chisholm, on the other hand, had an extremely disappointing season. In 137 games, he hit just .231 with 19 home runs and struck out a career high 157 times.

Ever since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead of the 2025 trade deadline, Bednar has been stellar in a Yankees uniform. Overall, he's posted a 2.39 ERA with 45 saves and 111 strikeouts in 86 appearances and 94 innings pitched.
He's claimed his role as a dominant closer in the New York bullpen, and it appears that the front office hopes to keep him around for a good amount of time.
Everyone knows that Chisholm brings a certain swag and energy to the ballpark on a daily basis. Ahead of the 2026 season, he said he was aiming to finish the year with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases, something that clearly showed his self-confidence.
The production on the field didn't match that, though, and it is unclear as to what kind of payday he would command on the open market. It's also unclear as to what suitors Chisholm would have due to his lack of production in previous seasons.
