Thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs' 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, they were able to remain among the NFL's unbeaten and improve to 5-0 on the season. They already just one win away from matching all of their 2025 win total and look like a Super Bowl contender once again.
There are a few big keys to that turnaround.
The return of a healthy Patrick Mahomes is one of the biggest.
So is the addition of free agent running back Kenneth Walker. Walker played a major role in Sunday's win (once again) and is starting to put together a solid MVP resume for himself.
Walker ran for 128 yards and two more touchdowns on Sunday, continuing what has been a sensational debut season for the Chiefs.
It is already his fourth 100-yard performance in the Chiefs' first five games and brings his season rushing total to 665 yards and six total touchdowns.
How good is that performance through five games?
It puts him on a list with only former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis.

His 665 yards also put him atop the NFL's rushing list for the season, moving him ahead of Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson despite the fact Robinson and the Falcons have played one additional game at this point.
That yardage total is also the most for any running back in their first five games with a new team.
Kenneth Walker III has 665 Rush yards this season, the most in NFL history in a player's first five games with a team!

How is Walker doing it? Yards after contact! He has 369 rushing yards after contact this season! 3 of his top 5 regular season career rush yards after contact… pic.twitter.com/yPhT5zqs3K
The "yards after contact" stat is also quite telling because it shows that Walker isn't just doing this because of the circumstances around him. It's not necessarily a dominant line, or the fact playing on a team with Mahomes opens things up for him. He's creating a lot of this for himself through pure power, vision and his own effectiveness.
All of that makes it worth starting the discussion as to whether or not he is in the early season MVP race.
It wouldn't be unwarranted.
He's been the best player on one of the NFL's best teams and has completely transformed their offense as it runs through him.
That sure sounds like an early season MVP resume. There is still a long way to go this season, and there will be fierce competition given the quarterbacks in the NFL, but he is certainly making an early statement.
