Giants appear to be sending clear message to Cam Skattebo with demotion

When it was reported that New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh was demoting running back Cam Skattebo from his starting role, many still expected the promising second-year man to be partially involved in the Giants game plan.

They could not have expected how things played out Sunday in New York's 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Cam Skattebo finished the game with zero touches

Skattebo was expected to see a decrease in production on Sunday due to having four fumbles through just five games this season. A decrease in production may not even be the correct term for how Skattebo's role disappeared on Sunday.

Not only was Skattebo removed from his role as the starter, but he was practically removed from the game plan entirely. Skattebo finished Sunday's game without a carry or a reception, the first time that's happened in his career.

New York had six different players with at least one carry on Sunday and Skattebo was not one of those. It was a shocking development for Skattebo, who, despite fumble issues, has racked up nearly 400 total yards and a touchdown in five games.

John Harbaugh clearly doesn't trust Cam Skattebo

Not only did the demotion of Skattebo show the lack of trust his head coach has in him, but so did the complete lack of touches and involvement in a blowout loss.

It's even more eye-opening that even with the Giants failing to run the ball against a defense that entered the game as the third-worst run defense, Skattebo was still not sent into the game to attempt to provide a spark and get his team going.

What happens in the coming weeks?

It's a bit unclear as to just how long Skattebo is going to stay out of the lineup. Whether it was just a one-week ordeal to send a message or something that will continue is yet to be seen.

Whichever way it works out, it is clear that Harbaugh wanted to send a message to Skattebo, and it will be intriguing to see if that message got across.
