After the Dallas Cowboys suffered a 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers that dropped Dallas to 2-4 this past Sunday night, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones teased that he and team owner/general manager Jerry Jones could make one more major roster addition before the NFL trade deadline arrives on Nov. 10.
For a piece published on Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano suggested that Stephen Jones wasn't bluffing when he made those comments.
"The Cowboys might have one more move in them," Fowler wrote. "Perhaps that's shortsighted, given their 2-4 record. But that might as well be 4-4 in this season's NFC East climate, where no commodity is proven, and [the Philadelphia Eagles'] transitional state has cracked the door open."
The 3-2-1 New York Giants currently sit atop the NFC East division standings. The 2-4 Eagles will be without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts (blood clots) for the rest of the season, while the 1-4-1 Washington Commanders could be a couple of losses away from firing head coach Dan Quinn.
As for who could be targeted by the Cowboys, Fowler repeated those who previously linked Dallas with Arizona Cardinals pass-rusher Josh Sweat. Interestingly, Fowler mentioned that Cincinnati Bengals edge-rusher Shemar Stewart is a "surprise name a few teams are tracking" ahead of the trade deadline.
"The 2025 first-round pick is not a factor in the team's rotation right now," Fowler shared about Stewart's future. "He has played 17 defensive snaps, well behind the total for the fourth defensive end, Cedric Johnson (83). And rookie second-rounder Cashius Howell has been impressive. Cincinnati typically doesn't move its young draft picks, but it would be surprising if the Bengals haven't received inquiries on Stewart, whose upside remains high."
"Due to prior trades," Graziano added, "Dallas has only four picks in next year's draft and is without its second-round pick in 2028, which could make deadline dealing difficult. But the Cowboys have been uncharacteristically aggressive over the past 12 months, and they're right in the thick of the division race in spite of how poorly they've played so far. They need edge-rush help...and outside of the defensive tackles, it's an extremely young defense that might benefit from a Super Bowl-winning veteran such as Sweat."
The Cowboys next play a "Monday Night Football" game at the Hurts-less Eagles on Oct. 26. Perhaps the Jones family will be inspired to acquire one more defensive contributor if Dallas earns a double-digit win at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
