The Detroit Lions had a bye week in the NFL's Week 6, and now they're heading into a fresh matchup against NFC North rivals the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at home.
The Lions have a 3-2 record going into the game, while the Packers are 4-2. Detroit is also at the bottom of the NFC North, so this matchup is huge for them.
Quarterback Jared Goff has had a strong start to his season. He's having an MVP-caliber start and really performing at a high level, throwing for 1,485 yards, 12 touchdowns and zero interceptions over five games. So, what does this offense have to work on to get its win total up?
During their bye week, the Lions moved down one spot on ESPN's NFL power rankings after Week 6. The team went from No. 11 to No. 12, so it's not a big drop. But in the piece, ESPN's Eric Woodyard points out that the offense needs to improve on third-down conversions.
In the piece, Woodyard notes that the Lions' offense is "tied with Buffalo for the most offensive points scored per game (32.8)," and that's thanks to Goff's huge start. But this team could use some help on those third downs.
"They are currently ranked 22nd in third-down conversion percentage at 37.3 percent," he adds in the feature. "And to go even deeper, Detroit is tied for dead last in third-and-short percentage (third-and-3 or less) at 43.8 percent."
So, while Detroit's defense often gets criticism for not keeping points off the board on the other side of the ball, this is an area where the offense could really improve.
