Patriots end first half with one of most improbable touchdowns of season

After giving up a late first half touchdown to the Chicago Bears, the New England Patriots received the ensuing kickoff down by 13 points and starting on their own 34 yard-line with nine seconds to play.

The odds of a touchdown seemed low.

A field goal seemed like the best-case scenario.

But the great thing about sports is that if you watch them long enough, you're probably going to eventually see something that makes you say, "how did that happen?"

That is what the Patriots did when they scored a 48-yard touchdown on the final play of the first half to go into the break.

Patriots stun Bears with improbable touchdown to close first half

After quarterback Drake Maye completed an 18-yard pass to A.J. Brown to get the Patriots into Chicago territory, they were going to have one play from the 48-yard line.

Instead of trying a 65-plus yard field goal, or throwing a low percentage Hail Mary into the end zone that would probably fall incomplete, the Patriots dialed up a dump-off pass to Rhamondre Stevenson.

All the Bears had to do was tackle him. It didn't matter where. It didn't matter how many yards he gained. All they had to do was tackle him and the half was over.

They failed.

It looked liked the Patriots were just trying to run out the clock and maybe get some stat-padding in for Maye and Stevenson. It turned into a touchdown.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said they practiced that play on Saturday, and it probably didn't work out as perfectly as it did here.

There is really no excuse for the Bears to allow that to happen.
