Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to face off on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. It's their first meeting of the season — and it's a game that will carry major implications for the future of the Spanish title race.
Both teams are serious European contenders, but they've had different trajectories thus far in the 2026-27 season. Here's a breakdown of their form, their strengths and their weaknesses ahead of their first "El Clasico" clash:
La Liga: First place, 9W 0D 0L, +30 goal difference
Champions League: Eighth place, 2W 0D 1L, +5 goal difference
Last five matches: WWWWL (Sevilla, Getafe, Galatasaray, Real Betis, Paris Saint Germain)
Barcelona enters this clasico off the back of a disappointing 4-2 loss to Paris Saint Germain, but that loss is the only blip within its otherwise-perfect season. It has a spotless domestic record, and it's well clear of the rest of the Spanish pack. Real Madrid could beat it handily on Sunday and still not come close to catching it at the top of the table.
For all of Barcelona's goalscoring prowess — that incredible domestic goal difference figure is the result of 39 goals scored in just nine games — Barcelona is struggling to keep clean sheets this season. It's kept just two in its last 10 matches across all competitions, and they came against relegation-threatened Valencia and Getafe. Blame coach Hansi Flick's high-line press: It leaves massive gaps in Barcelona's defense that are easy for opponents to exploit. Flick doesn't care. He never has. He knows that his team can afford to leak a goal or two if it's capable of scoring twice as many.

Two key players will be absent from Barcelona's lineup in this clasico: French right back Jules Kounde and Spanish playmaker Dani Olmo. Flick will likely deploy teenage fullback Xavi Espart in Kounde's place, but Olmo's backfill is a bigger question. Fermin Lopez came on to replace him when he suffered an injury against PSG, but Lopez and Olmo aren't like-for-like replacements. Olmo is a traditional playmaking No. 10; Lopez tends to thrive in a wider position.
The other open question for Barcelona surrounds its Ballon D'Or-winning midfielder Rodri. He's the difference-maker for this team; his icy control of midfield is the reason its high-risk high line actually pays off most of the time. Flick has been carefully managing Rodri's minutes in advance of the clasico to ensure that he'll be ready for action, but if he isn't — and he has to come out early against a hungry Real Madrid attack — then things could get dicey for Barcelona as the game ticks on.
La Liga: Third place, 7W 0D 2L, +14 goal difference
Champions League: Fourth place, 3W 0D 0L, +5 goal difference
Last five matches: LWWWW (Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Roma, Sevilla, RB Leipzig)
While Barcelona has been close to perfect, Real Madrid has struggled to find consistency in 2026. It fell to both Atletico Madrid and Real Betis in league play, dropping to a disappointing third in the Spanish league table, and while its Champions League form is perfect, its performances there have been far from it. Madrid needed a 90th-minute winner from center-back Antonio Rudiger to take down Roma and fought for its close-run 2-1 win over Inter Milan on the opening matchday of the season.

When Madrid is on, though, it's glorious. Its 19-year-old Ivorian winger Yan Diomande has looked like one of the best young players in Europe this season, and its homegrown 21-year-old striker Carlos Espi has already scored two dramatic buzzer-beaters for the team in 2026. The question for Madrid isn't whether its star-studded attack will show up; its which of its stars make the most sense together on any given day.
Brazilian left winger Vinicius Jr. — immensely talented but notoriously volatile — is the biggest question mark there, but he removed himself from clasico contention after receiving a silly red card against Villarreal. (He picked up a four-game league suspension for his troubles.) Coach Jose Mourinho is likely to opt for a front line of Arda Guler on the left, Jude Bellingham in the 10, Diomande on the right and Kylian Mbappé up top...but if he really wanted to rock the boat, he could bench Guler, slot Mbappé into the left winger position and start young Espi instead. It'd be a gamble, but it'd also be an absolute hoot.
Where Barcelona's midfield is known for its calmness on the ball, Madrid's is known for...the opposite of that. The center of the park is its biggest weakness and it will be fascinating to see how Mourinho handles it. His best midfield pairing is Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde, but those two famously got into a fistfight in the Madrid locker room last January, so they might not be his most stable pairing. It wouldn't be surprising to see him slot Valverde into a fullback role instead and give Tchouameni and former Manchester City man Bernardo Silva the run of the park instead.
Barcelona will host Real Madrid on Sunday, Oct. 25.
