Jesse Legree speaks out after making decision to re-sign with Oregon State

The nation's leading receiver, Jesse Legree, has made a decision on his future.

Legree announced that he has re-signed with the Oregon State Beavers for the 2027-28 season.

OSU is currently on its bye week, and Legree made the announcement official where he played his senior year of high school, St. Frances Academy, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Legree ranks No. 1 in the FBS in receiving yards per game (148.6), yards per reception (24.5), receiving yards (1,040) and receiving touchdowns (14).

Jesse Legree wants his return to recruit others to Corvallis

Torrey Smith, who attended the University of Maryland, tweeted on his X account, "Proud of him. Jesse didn't have a real "Signing Day" experience. Everything happened so fast. It's exciting to see him have this moment at his high school. The last signing day, he watched his friends. He created his own moment."

For Legree, the announcement was as much an endorsement of the future as it was a personal decision.

He said he wanted to publicly invest in Oregon State's trajectory, adding that he believes head coach JaMarcus Shephard is on track to elevate the program into something unrecognizable from where it stands today.

He said he wanted the announcement to serve as a recruiting tool of its own, helping draw talented recruits and transfers to Oregon State.

"I fell in love with the culture out there," Legree told ESPN, via Pete Thamel. "We've built a great culture, and it's only going to get bigger from here. This is going to become the start of a national powerhouse."

The Beavers have spent the last few years navigating conference realignment, coaching changes and roster turnover. Retaining a proven playmaker sends a message that Oregon State is no longer simply trying to survive those changes.

This is what a recruiting victory looks like in 2026

Beaver alumnus Chad Johnson will surely be happy with Legree re-signing with the Beavers next season.

Johnson recently made headlines by publicly advocating for Oregon State to keep its star player, even saying that he would contribute $2 million to help make it happen. From that perspective, Legree's decision to stay represents more than roster retention. It's proof that the Beavers can convince elite talent to build something in Corvallis rather than chase opportunities elsewhere.

Liam Blutman, host of the "Brandon Walker College Football Show," questioned what it says about the current state of college football recruiting.

"Thrilled he's staying at Oregon State. That rocks. But this is still so weird to do; I don't get it," Blutman said on X. "We're at a point in this sport where this high school decision day gimmick is now going to invade CFB during the season? Also, the unfortunate reality is this doesn't stop any program from pursuing him heavy."

In the NIL era, keeping a star player has become its own recruiting win. Blutman's reaction speaks to a new reality in college football: Staying has become almost as newsworthy as transferring.

The Beavers (5-2, 3-0 Pac-12) will return to the field on Halloween night when they travel to play the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Beavers will host Texas State on Nov. 7 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
