Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer insists he's an 'elite play-caller' amid hot-seat chatter

For an article published on Thursday, Saad Yousuf of The Athletic wrote that Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is responsible for one of the "hottest seats in the NFL" this fall, in part because Schottenheimer has been guilty of "a fair share of offensive miscues and game-management issues, especially in recent weeks."

As noted by Sean Deveney of Heavy, Schottenheimer said during a Friday morning appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan that he is "absolutely not" giving up offensive play-calling duties. Schottenheimer later made it clear that he believes he's the best person for that role.

Brian Schottenheimer still has "incredible confidence" in Cowboys' offense

"I have incredible confidence in our offense," Schottenheimer said, per Julia Stumbaugh of Bleacher Report. "Have not played well the last two weeks. We understand a lot of the reasons why, have addressed a lot of the reasons why."

Questions about whether or not Schottenheimer is stretched out too thin arose after what had been advertised to be the "greatest offense there is" was outperformed in Dallas' 24-16 upset loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 8 and in the Cowboys' 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18. Over those two defeats, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott tossed four interceptions.

Is Brian Schottenheimer elite?

After Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones insisted that he and team owner/general manager Jerry Jones "absolutely" believe in Schottenheimer, Jerry Jones revealed that he has had "recent conversations" with Schottenheimer about the Dallas offense.

Jerry Jones also said this past Wednesday that he is "frustrated" and "disappointed" that the Cowboys are 2-4 heading into this coming Monday night's game at a 2-4 Philadelphia Eagles team that will be without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts (blood clots).

"We haven't changed who we are," Schottenheimer added during the segment. "We're still a good explosive offense with weapons. We can hurt you a lot of different ways. Certainly have not lost the ability to call plays. I'm an elite play-caller in this league, and I think that that can turn around quickly."

As of early Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had Dallas as a 4.5-point road favorite over Philadelphia.
