Outfielder Nathan Lukes, 32, is one of five Toronto Blue Jays finalists nominated for an AL 2026 Gold Glove Award.
Despite the Blue Jays' disappointing season following their successful run to the World Series in 2025, Lukes' defense was a significant bright spot.
Considering his defensive prowess in the outfield this season, his case for winning his first major MLB accolade in right field is promising.
Lukes seamlessly flashed the leather by demonstrating elite arm strength and strong fielding backed up by stellar defensive metrics.
He ended the 2026 season tied for third among all right fielders with nine outfield assists, showcasing his accuracy in throwing out baserunners. His strong arm also had him log an arm value of 6, ranking in the 98th percentile.
He also served as a reliable defenseman, only committing one error all season, and compiled 11 defensive runs saved (DRS), ranking him fourth among all AL outfielders.
He also boasted a field running value (FRV) of +8 (86th percentile) and a +5 FRV in right field. All in all, Lukes started 87 games in right field and provided polished, unheralded defense that deserves more recognition.
Acting as a defensive wall, one of his defensive gems worth noting came against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 20. He made a remarkable leaping grab taking extra bases away from Cedric Mullins in the bottom of the seventh inning. He successfully tracked the ball down while showcasing stellar acrobatic athleticism.
