Aston Villa's Senegalese stars end Manchester City's unbeaten Premier League run

He'd had him in his pocket all match.

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol had a difficult job in his team's Premier League clash against Aston Villa. He was tasked with neutralizing Villa's exciting Brazilian winger Alysson — a right winger with one Premier League goal to his name already in 2026-27 — and he managed just fine. Alysson was quick, but Gvardiol was quicker, and while Villa had its way with City throughout the match, it never really broke through on Gvardiol's flank.

Imagine Gvardiol's relief, then, when Alysson was subbed off in the 59th minute for Villa's teenage prospect Ibrahim Mbaye. Gvardiol visibly relaxed in the moments following the change. If I handled Alysson without any trouble, his body language seemed to say, then I should be all set against his backfill.

Villa knew what Gvardiol didn't: that Mbaye was no ordinary backfill. It sensed Gvardiol's vulnerability and it pounced within seconds. Striker Nicolas Jackson launched a booming ball up the flank and Gvardiol backed off from it, seemingly certain that no one — especially not Mbaye — would have the legs to run onto it. Mbaye turned on his afterburners, chased the ball down, threaded a quick cross past Gvardiol and found Jackson, now sprinting just as quickly himself, in the center of City's penalty box.

Jackson thundered his shot past City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and sent Villa ahead of City in style. Gvardiol wandered around City's box in a daze.

That goal wound up being decisive. Villa beat City 2-1 to end its perfect nine-game Premier League run and blow the title race wide open. And it was Villa's twin Senegalese superstars — Jackson, an inconsistent striker-turned-incandescent under coach Unai Emery, and Mbaye, a precocious prospect whose soccer brain belies his 18 years — who made it happen. Gvardiol might not have seen them coming, but he'll certainly remember them going...and the rest of the Premier League would do well to follow suit.

Nicolas Jackson

Villa coach Unai Emery excels at many things, but it's his charmed work with underperforming strikers that really sets him apart from his peers. His arrival at Aston Villa in 2022 coincided with the rapid rise of English forward Ollie Watkins, and now, four years later, with Watkins abroad after earning a big-money transfer, Emery is working his magic with 25-year-old Jackson instead.

This isn't the first time Emery and Jackson have collaborated. The two met at Villarreal in 2020 when Jackson was still a teenager, and Jackson credits Emery with his development as a professional. "Unai Emery taught me a lot in football," he said. "He taught me everything."

Jackson looked like an exciting prospect at Villarreal, but moving on from Emery's guidance hampered his development. He spent a frustrating three seasons at Chelsea where front office chaos, constant rotation and a lack of support led him to lose the goalscoring instinct that defined him in the first place. When Emery brought Jackson to Villa in the summer of 2026 for over $50 million, the general consensus was that he was wildly overpaying.

He wasn't. Emery knew he could get Jackson back to his Villarreal best with time, patience and trust.

"He was always learning," Emery said of Jackson in his Villarreal days. "He was always demanding to train more, to be focused. He was also being a professional every day out of training sessions at home because he was focused on football like the first priority in his life."

It took a few games, but Emery has helped Jackson find his groove again, and his two goals in this match against Manchester City are the latest in a series of eyebrow-raising performances from the Senegalese striker.

Ibrahim Mbaye

While Emery is rehabilitating Jackson after years of regression, he's attempting to do the opposite with his Senegalese countryman Mbaye. The 18-year-old, who arrived in the summer from Paris Saint Germain, has the world at his feet...providing he can stay focused and humble.

"He is in a process," Emery said. "He needs to be patient, getting minutes and showing his quality to help us and working collectively and tactically like we are building the team."

Jackson, for one, is excited to have Mbaye around. "He [Mbaye] is an amazing player," he said. "We're in the [Senegal] national team together. He's very fast. It's good to have him."

Jackson and Mbaye's paths appear to be crossing at the right time. Jackson has the lived experience to keep Mbaye on track, while Mbaye has the pace and confidence to lift Jackson out of the doldrums that plagued him at Chelsea.

Together, the Senegalese attackers can do great things. Ending City's nine-game unbeaten run is a fabulous start, but there is more to come from both players in the future.

Aston Villa will continue its Premier League campaign on Saturday, Oct. 31 against Fulham.
