Sammy Smith's banner weekend at Talladega one to remember

To say this weekend was the greatest of Sammy Smith's professional career so far would be a massive understatement.

After announcing that he'll be racing full-time for a championship-caliber team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in TRICON Garage on Friday, Smith went out and won Friday's Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway with Spire Motorsports, his first victory in the series.

The 22-year-old driver, who is currently full-time in the NASCAR O'Reilly Series with JR Motorsports, then went out and scored his first win of the 2026 season at Talladega in Saturday's O'Reilly race, leading only the final lap on what turned into a massive 63-point day. Smith has now won a NOAPS race in four consecutive campaigns.

If any Cup Series drivers suddenly fall ill prior to Sunday's YellaWood 500 (2 p.m. ET, NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), team owners would surely be clamoring for Smith to drive their car.

"To finish one off is good," Smith said in his post-race news conference. "Hopefully we can go do it again next week."

Needless to say, winning twice in 24 hours makes for a good weekend at the office.

Sammy Smith had rare superspeedway luck this weekend

"It's very rare to finish one of these races," Smith said. "To not only finish them, but to win two in a row is very special. It's very fortunate. I'm very thankful to be in this position. Obviously, my goal yesterday was to focus hard on the trucks [at] Talladega and Martinsville because that's where I'm heading next year.

"Really put more focus than I have on the past on how to execute a truck race. And then obviously, I'm very motivated to try to win one more race this year before I leave JRM. Glad we were able to do that today. We have two more shots coming up."

Smith went from being winless on the season in both series to having two victories in a two-day span. Regardless of what happens over the next two weeks, he'll have ended 2026 on a very high note.
