Losses by BYU and Texas Tech were disastrous for the Big 12 on Saturday.
Utah's 21-13 win over Houston prevented three Big 12 teams ranked in the top 10 nationally from losing on the same day for the first time in conference history. BYU lost 39-31 in double overtime at Central Florida and Texas Tech was defeated 37-24 at Cincinnati.
The losses by BYU and Texas Tech will likely require them to win out to earn a College Football Playoff berth. BYU and Texas Tech do not play during the regular season. If BYU and Texas Tech do win out, they would likely play in the Big 12 Championship Game.
BYU fell from second in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings to eighth and from third to ninth in the AFCA Coaches Polls this week. Texas Tech dropped from eighth in the AP Top 25 to 13th and from fifth to 14th in the AFCA Coaches Polls for Week 9.
Utah moved from 10th to sixth in the AP Top 25 and received one first-place vote. The Utes are fifth in the AFCA Coaches Poll after being ranked ninth in Week 8. Miami, UCLA and Utah are the only undefeated teams remaining nationally. Utah is also the only Big 12 team without a conference loss.

Utah improved to 4-0 in the Big 12 and 7-0 overall after its win over Houston. Arizona, BYU, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are 3-1 in the Big 12 after Week 8. Arizona beat Iowa State 39-3 and Oklahoma State earned a 57-24 win over Colorado on Saturday.
No. 22-ranked Arizona is at No. 13 Texas Tech on Saturday in one of the biggest games in the Big 12 this season. Utah hopes to avoid the same fate as Texas Tech at Cincinnati on Saturday. BYU is at Utah on Nov. 7 in what could be a decisive game for a berth in the Big 12 Championship Game.
