Vikings may regret trading J.J. McCarthy after another impressive game

The Minnesota Vikings mishandled the saga of quarterback J.J. McCarthy at every step of the way. Instead of sticking with a productive and now Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Sam Darnold last year, the Vikings let him walk in free agency and started the second-year signal-caller instead.

He had an underwhelming, injury-riddled campaign in 2025, so Minnesota brought in former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray this offseason instead of continuing to develop its young prospect.

J.J. McCarthy looks like a brand-new quarterback with the Giants

With McCarthy buried on the depth chart and having no real path to the field, the Vikings traded him to the New York Giants. The former first-round pick didn’t see the field immediately, but he was inserted into last week’s game against the New Orleans Saints and had a historic day, throwing for 243 yards in just one quarter.

This performance impressed the coaching staff enough for McCarthy to become QB1 on the team. In his first start with his new club, the former Michigan Wolverine threw for 252 yards and led an impressive 27-21 win over the Houston Texans.

McCarthy is thriving in one of the biggest markets in the nation while the Vikings are treading water offensively. They are 6-0 but somehow have one of the worst offenses in the league, averaging 21.8 points per game and landing in the bottom third of the NFL in yards per game.

Murray hasn’t been anything close to the offensive upgrade Minnesota expected so far. He has only thrown three touchdowns in the four games he’s started and finished, and he’s averaging less than 200 passing yards per game.

The Vikings drafted McCarthy to be the future of the franchise, but they had no patience with him, and it looks like it could blow up in their faces. Murray looks much like the inconsistent quarterback he proved to be in Arizona, while McCarthy might be developing into the player Minnesota believed he could be.
