As recently as Friday, it seemed as if Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was going to return from the ankle injury he suffered in the Ravens' 24-18 win over the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 4 to start for Baltimore against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
However, Ravens head coach Jesse Minter ultimately had to once again turn to backup Tyler Huntley, who guided the club on zero scoring drives in the second half of a blowout 35-13 loss to Cincinnati that dropped the Ravens to 4-3. During Sunday's edition of NBC's "Football Night in America" program, NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk and NBC Sports shared an update on Jackson's status that will likely leave Baltimore fans concerned.
"He suffered that high-ankle sprain three weeks ago," Florio said about Jackson. "He returned to practice [last week], but he was limited Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Friday, he said, 'Right now, I'm heading in the right direction.' He was officially listed as questionable for the [Bengals] game, but then on Saturday, they downgraded him to out. I'm told that inside the building right now, no one knows when he'll be back, and that any effort to predict a timeline for Lamar Jackson would be a guess."
The previously mentioned Huntley helped the Ravens earn a 30-23 overtime victory at the Atlanta Falcons back on Oct. 11. He then completed 19-of-31 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens' 13-10 loss at the rival Cleveland Browns on Oct. 18.
That said, the fact that the Bengals scored 35 unanswered second-half points against the Ravens served as a reminder of what Baltimore will and won't be able to achieve if Jackson isn't fully fit come January.
On Nov. 1, the Ravens will play at a 5-1 Buffalo Bills side that will be rested coming off its bye. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Baltimore as a 3.5-point road underdog for that matchup.
The Ravens will then have a "Thursday Night Football" home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 5. It seems like there is at least some chance that Jackson could miss both of those games.
