Bam Adebayo addresses struggles amid disastrous start for Heat

Bam Adebayo met reporters after the Miami Heat fell to 0-4 on Monday night and gave a pointed answer about who has been absorbing the blame for it.

Adebayo had eight points on 3-of-10 shooting, including 0-of-5 from three, in the 113-109 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Giannis Antetokounmpo posted 29 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists.

"No, you can't overthink basketball, man," Adebayo said when asked if part of the problem is learning to play next to Antetokounmpo, via Jump View.

"For me, it's my shot not going in. I'm not going to overthink that. It's funny how the outside noise wants to make me the scapegoat. But when the tables turn and the energy shifts, just be prepared for that."

He went further when the subject turned to his co-star. Asked if he had talked with Antetokounmpo about the outside noise, Adebayo pointed the question back at the people asking it.

"Nah, I mean, the media gonna be the media. You know, they're gonna try to bury you when you down, but then it's quiet when you up. So you know, you expect that from the media," Adebayo said, via Underdog NBA.

Whatever the two have or have not discussed privately, Heat great Dwyane Wade publicly urged them after the 0-3 start to sit down and settle who leads Miami, the same conversation he said he once had with LeBron James.

Is the criticism of Bam Adebayo really unfair?

On March 10, Adebayo scored 83 points in a 150-129 win over the Washington Wizards, the second-highest total in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100.

His description of a media that buries players when they are down and goes silent when they are up comes from someone who has lived both ends in less than eight months.

Through four games this season, Adebayo is averaging 11.8 points on 40 percent shooting and has made 16.7 percent of his three-pointers, with two single-digit scoring nights already.

A winless team that added Antetokounmpo this summer to contend was always going to face hard questions about its second star with numbers like those.

Erik Spoelstra's postgame assessment centered on the same thing that outside voices have pointed to since opening night: Adebayo's aggression.

"He just needs to see the ball go in. He had some good clean looks; he just wasn't able to capitalize on them. We'll work together to get him aggressive in the spots he's comfortable," Spoelstra said.

"I think I got to do a better job of not letting him get lost in the game. He got to be more aggressive. I think that he will," guard Davion Mitchell said, via The Heat Realm.

Miami gets its next shot at a first win Wednesday in Atlanta.
