The Baltimore Ravens have received encouraging news about rookie guard Vega Ioane, but his expected absence creates another challenge for an offensive line already struggling with injuries.
ESPN/NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the first-round pick suffered an MCL sprain during Sunday's 35-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to Rapoport, the injury is considered short-term, although Ioane will miss some time. While that prognosis is a relief for Baltimore, losing one of its most consistent offensive linemen is still a significant setback as the team prepares for a difficult Week 8 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
Ioane, selected 14th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, has been one of the most impressive rookies in the league this season. He started Baltimore's first seven games, showing versatility by moving from right guard to center when injuries depleted the team's options at the position.

The timing is particularly frustrating for Baltimore. The Ravens have already lost three centers to significant injuries: Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic. That forced the coaching staff to experiment with its interior offensive line before the team acquired veteran center Cam Jurgens.
Jurgens made his Baltimore debut against Cincinnati, allowing Ioane to return to right guard, his natural position. However, Ioane exited the game with his knee injury and was replaced by Emery Jones Jr.
The injury means Baltimore must once again adjust its starting combination. With Ioane sidelined, Jones could continue at right guard, although the coaching staff will have to evaluate its options during the week.
The rookie's versatility has been especially valuable because he has performed well despite switching positions. Losing that flexibility could complicate the Ravens' efforts to establish consistency up front, particularly in the running game and in pass protection.
Baltimore enters Week 8 looking to respond after consecutive losses. The Ravens fell to 4-3 following their collapse against Cincinnati, making Sunday's road game against Buffalo an important opportunity to regain momentum.
The Bills present a difficult challenge, and the Ravens could be without one of their best offensive linemen. Baltimore will need its remaining blockers to adapt quickly, especially if the coaching staff has to make further changes to the starting lineup.
There is still a positive side to Ioane's diagnosis. A short-term injury is considerably better news than a season-ending setback for a rookie who has already become a key part of the offense.
However, the Ravens cannot afford to overlook the broader issue. Their offensive line has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries, and the latest setback threatens to prolong that instability.
Ioane's eventual return should help Baltimore restore some continuity. Until then, the Ravens must find a reliable replacement and protect their quarterback with a reshuffled line as they attempt to stop their slide.
