Insider repeats that Jets owner Woody Johnson wants 'to land a big fish like Mike Tomlin in 2027'

While a report from last week insisted that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson does not want to fire head coach Aaron Glenn, that was shared before the Jets suffered a 28-25 loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins in East Rutherford, NJ, this past Sunday.

Glenn is on track to coach the 2-5 Jets for this coming Sunday's home game against a Las Vegas Raiders side that has gone from 3-0 to 3-4. For a Casino.org piece published on Tuesday, NFL insider Jason La Canfora suggested that Glenn could be shown the door if the Jets fall to the Raiders at MetLife Stadium.

Has Woody Johnson changed his mind about potential in-season coaching change?

"The Jets’ inability to manage the final two minutes of a half is just the kind of fodder owner Woody Johnson needs to justify an in-season coaching change," La Canfora wrote.

La Canfora repeated others who previously said that offensive coordinator Frank Reich could fill in as the Jets' interim head coach through January if Johnson decides to show Glenn the door. Glenn's overall record with the Jets fell to 5-19 on Oct. 25, and there's no indication he is about to become a top-tier head coach overnight.

Mike Tomlin chatter continues to hover over the Jets

Back in the summer, multiple reports surfaced claiming that Johnson viewed former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as a potential replacement for Glenn. Earlier this month, a story mentioned that Johnson could eventually want to hire "a high-profile" coach such as Tomlin.

On Tuesday, La Canfora revealed that "rumors persist that Johnson wants to position the franchise to land a big fish like Mike Tomlin in 2027." Tomlin is spending this season serving as an analyst for NBC's NFL-related programming, and it's unclear whether or not he would leave the network for the Jets job.

As of Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Jets as 3.5-point home favorites over the Raiders. Even if Glenn leads his team to a victory on the first Sunday of November, it seems like whispers linking Tomlin to the Jets won't be going away anytime soon.
