Long before first baseman Jake Bauers became a postseason hero for the Milwaukee Brewers, he featured for a New York Yankees team that finished the 2023 season with a record of 82-80 en route to missing the playoffs.
More recently, Bauers became a World Series champion when the Brewers notched a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. While celebrating that accomplishment with Bauers, Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy took a shot at the free-agent-to-be's former employer.
"You're going to be a rich (expletive)," Murphy told Bauers, as shared by JR Radcliffe and Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Just remember when you're on that horsesh-- Yankees team and you guys are all playing for yourselves, just remember, this is the way we used to do it."
Bauers recently told MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post that he "would love to" stay with the Brewers and "would love to spend the rest of my career here." However, the perception exists that the 31-year-old played his way into earning the type of contract Milwaukee simply will not hand him before the expected lockout begins in early December.
ESPN stats show that Bauers led the Brewers for the regular season with 26 home runs and a .389 on-base percentage. He was third on the club with 86 RBI and first among qualified players with a .874 OPS.
In October, Bauers earned National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player honors after he hit .286 with one double, one home run, three walks and six RBI in Milwaukee's four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"You ain't getting rid of me that easy," Bauers responded to Murphy's comment.
Multiple teams will have something to say about that come November.
"I'm most proud of the way the lineup came together and bought into a singular approach," Bauers said about the Brewers' postseason run during his postgame comments on Wednesday night. "One through nine. Throughout the entire season, the way they executed, it was (expletive) exciting."
Bauers' exciting postseason moments are going to get him paid in a big way this fall.
