Eagles face running back emergency after Dameon Pierce lands on injured reserve

The Philadelphia Eagles are facing a growing problem in their backfield after placing Dameon Pierce on injured reserve.

With three other running backs already on the list and Saquon Barkley dealing with multiple injuries, Philadelphia could enter its Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders with extremely limited options.

Pierce was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after leaving the Eagles' 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He joins Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley and Carson Steele, leaving four Philadelphia running backs on injured reserve.

The situation is particularly concerning because Barkley, the team's established starter, is also dealing with hamstring and back problems. He returned against Dallas after missing time with a hamstring injury but played only 10 snaps before his back forced him out of the game.

Barkley said he expected to be available against Washington, but his participation remains a key storyline heading into Sunday night. Philadelphia cannot afford to assume its star running back will be able to handle his usual workload.

Eagles could turn to Elijah Mitchell and Jaydon Blue

With Pierce unavailable, Philadelphia must consider how to distribute its carries if Barkley cannot play or remains limited.

Elijah Mitchell is one potential option. The veteran signed with the Eagles practice squad earlier in October and was elevated for the Dallas game, recording three carries for 11 yards. Jaydon Blue, meanwhile, was signed from the practice squad to the active roster on Wednesday.

Both backs could receive opportunities against Washington, although Mitchell's availability depends on Philadelphia's roster decisions before kickoff. Neither player offers the same established role as Barkley, leaving the coaching staff with difficult decisions about how to structure the offense.

The Eagles' ground game has already struggled this season. Philadelphia entered Week 8 ranked 27th in the NFL with 88 rushing yards per game and 24th with 3.9 yards per carry.

Those numbers make the injuries even more damaging. The team is not simply losing depth from an otherwise productive rushing attack; it must find a way to improve its ground production while potentially relying on less experienced options.

Philadelphia must find another way to support its offense

The Eagles' immediate priority is determining Barkley's status and establishing a workable backfield rotation. If he cannot handle a full workload, Philadelphia may need to lean more heavily on its passing game and use shorter throws or additional personnel to compensate for the shortage of running backs.

That adjustment would place more responsibility on the remaining offensive playmakers and the coaching staff. It could also make the offense more predictable if Washington can anticipate when Philadelphia is likely to run or pass.

The injury situation does not automatically doom the Eagles against the Commanders, but it removes flexibility from a unit that needs to become more consistent. With four running backs on injured reserve and Barkley's status uncertain, Philadelphia faces a significant test of its depth.

How the Eagles respond could determine whether their ground game stabilizes or becomes a continuing problem as the season progresses.
