Washington Wizards rookie AJ Dybantsa had quite a start to his NBA career.
The top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft made his long-awaited league debut on Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, and immediately turned heads with his first-quarter performance.
The former BYU Cougars star scored nine points in the opening period, the most ever in a first quarter by a Wizards rookie since the 1997-98 season, according to ESPN Insights.

The 19-year-old Dybantsa did not suit up in the Wizards’ first four games of the season because of an ankle injury he suffered in the preseason finale. During his absence, Washington went 2-2. Dybantsa’s NBA debut, however, did not translate into a victory for the Wizards, who lost to the Cavs, 121-111.
Washington had a hot start, with the Wizards outscoring the home team 42-34 in the first frame. But Dybantsa and company couldn’t stop the Cavs after halftime, as Cleveland outscored Washington by 20 points over the final two periods.
Dybantsa concluded his first NBA game with 19 points, leading the Wizards in scoring, plus two rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes. He can build on that performance for a better one on Friday against the Charlotte Hornets at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
