Ravens' QB luck goes from bad to worse as Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley exit against Bills

Fans who were looking forward to star quarterbacks Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) battling in Week 8 were sorely disappointed.

Jackson, who hadn't played since Week 4 because of a left ankle sprain, suffered a right thumb injury on Baltimore's first drive in its road game against Buffalo. He exited quickly and was ruled out shortly after. Just when it seemed Baltimore's injury luck couldn't get any worse, it did.

Ravens QB2 Tyler Huntley suffers injury

Backup QB Tyler Huntley suffered a toe injury in the second quarter after Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver rolled on his leg. The Ravens ruled him out at halftime. The longtime backup QB finished 2-of-4 passing.

Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie who starred collegiately for the Connecticut Huskies, filled in for Huntley. The 25-year-old passer threw an interception just before the end of the first half, but what did you expect?

The Ravens didn't want to see Fagnano play on Sunday. Heck, they didn't want to see Huntley play. Two-time league MVP Jackson drives their offense. Without him, it's much less explosive.

In its first four games with Jackson at the helm, Baltimore averaged 29 points per game. That number dipped to 17.7 PPG over its past three games.

Huntley didn't tank over his past three games, but he didn't elevate the Ravens offense, either. During this span, the QB completed 66-of-97 passes for 664 yards, throwing four touchdowns against one interception. Baltimore (4-3 entering Sunday) went 1-2 during this stretch.

Don't bank on the Ravens offense being much better with Fagnano if Huntley's toe injury is a long-term issue.

"Fagnano is a little older and lacks above-average mobility, accuracy and arm talent to build around, so a practice squad might be his ceiling," wrote NFL.com's Lance Zierlein in his predraft scouting report.

The Ravens will miss Jackson for an unspecified period. ESPN reported he was placed on injured reserve and will require thumb surgery. CBS cameras spotted him with a brace on his thumb when he came out of the locker room for the second half. Huntley's uncertain status compounds Baltimore's problems.
