The Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback situation took a major turn for the worse on Sunday, and it prompted everyone to make the same joke.
The Ravens saw starter Lamar Jackson go down with a hand injury on the first play from scrimmage ( video here ) and then lost backup Tyler Huntley to a toe injury not long after. That meant the Ravens had to turn to third-string quarterback Joe Fagnano against the Buffalo Bills.
It was quickly noted that Fagnano had won the job at the expense of former Heisman Trophy finalist Diego Pavia during training camp. That led to a lot of jokes about how Pavia had actually just narrowly missed out on a chance in the NFL.
The Ravens, remember, chose Joe Fagnano over Diego Pavia in the offeason after signing both rookie quarterbacks as undrafted free agents. Pavia was waived in July just ahead of training camp.

The Ravens did sign Pavia as an undrafted free agent during the offseason, but parted ways with him rather quickly. Fagnano, another undrafted rookie, wound up seizing the job instead, and wound up being called into action.
Pavia has indicated that he plans to pursue a career in the UFL. He might spend at least part of Sunday wondering what could have been for him.
