Malik Willis calls out Ollie Gordon over his costly outburst

Malik Willis has publicly called out Ollie Gordon for hurting the Miami Dolphins’ chances in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

The Dolphins running back drew a flag after a short gain midway through the third quarter at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Gordon taunted Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane, prompting officials to penalize him for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley took Gordon out for the rest of the drive, which ended in a punt. The two were later seen arguing on the Dolphins’ sideline.

Willis took his coach’s side as he spoke to reporters following the Dolphins’ 24-19 loss to the Patriots.

“Ollie’s a competitor, and he cares about the game a lot,” Willis said of Gordon. “I was just letting him know that in that situation, that he’s deada– wrong. That’s the honest truth. It’d be wrong if I didn’t tell him the truth. If I’d be like, ‘That’s okay, you were just trying to compete.’

“We went from 3rd-and-4 to 3rd-and-20, and we did not convert. … That’s something that we can control, and that is wrong.”

Willis added that he assured Gordon that the quarterback was “on his side” and “with him” as teammates, but still had to call him out for being “dead wrong.”

The Dolphins led 13-3 at halftime before the Patriots outscored them 21-6 in the second half. Miami’s only points after halftime came on a touchdown just before the two-minute warning.
