Real Madrid doesn't have a Vini Jr. problem; it has a Yan Diomande opportunity

It really was supposed to be close. Racing Santander welcomed Real Madrid to its northern stadium with a questionable La Liga record, yes, but it had strung together impressive results against big clubs along the way to lift its spirits. Think 2-1 wins over Espanyol and Alaves; think a 2-2 draw with the once-great Valencia. Yes, Madrid was the heavy favorite, but Racing entered the match with a fair bit of fight.

It left it with its tail firmly between its legs. Madrid won the match 3-0 to keep itself within three points of league leader Barcelona—and it did so without the help of its suspended attacking superstar Vinicius Jr.

Vini Jr. received a red card and a four-game suspension for his violent conduct in mid-October against Villarreal. (He was judged to have pulled Nathan Saliba's hair, and yes, hair-pulling is just as forbidden in the men's game as it is in the women's.) Vini Jr.'s long absence should've left Madrid coach Jose Mourinho in a quandary—he is one of the team's most recognizable and prolific attackers, after all—but it appears to have given Mourinho newfound freedom instead. With Vini Jr. unavailable, Mourinho has been clear to start Ivorian teenager Yan Diomande on the left wing instead...and Diomande has been playing like he intends to stay there forever.

Diomande was the man of the match against Santander, and while his heart-stopping roofed volley did most of the heavy lifting to earn him that title, his defensive work rate was a big part of the equation too. That's a skill that Vini Jr. hasn't shown at Madrid, and Mourinho was quick to point out how important it was to see it in action.

"When more offensive-minded players make those selfless contributions, it sends a positive message to the team," he said after the match.

The match should've been close; the starting left winger should've been Vini Jr. But it wasn't, and he wasn't, and the interplay between those two truths has given Mourinho plenty to consider. He and Madrid don't have a thorny Vini Jr. problem: they have an incredible Diomande opportunity.

A unique background

19-year-old Abidjan native Diomande joined Madrid in the summer of 2026 on a deal worth nearly $140 million. The trade made him the most expensive African player in history and the most expensive Madrid player in history, too. With the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham and, of course, Vini Jr. already on the books at Madrid, Diomande wasn't expected to start; his colossal valuation was a reflection of his future potential rather than his immediate expected impact.

Diomande grew up in the Ivory Coast but developed as a soccer player in the United States at Florida's DME Academy. He's the best-known soccer alum of the program by far and his work there earned him the opportunity to play in Europe—first with Leganés in the Spanish second division and later with RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. Diomande's breakout performances with Leipzig earned him a call-up to the Ivory Coast's 2026 World Cup team, and that, coupled with his high developmental ceiling, put him firmly on Madrid's radar.

Diomande's strength is in his versatility. He can play on the right or the left flank with his right or his left foot, meaning that he can serve as a traditional or inverted winger anywhere on the field. Few players—and none of Madrid's existing superstars—can do the same.

A Vini Jr. problem and a Diomande solution

Vini Jr. is Madrid's starting left winger, and for good reason: he's a world-beating talent in that position, and he's earned his spot in the lineup. But Vini Jr. is also Madrid's most vocal and hard-to-please player, and he has fallen out with every single one of the club's coaches bar master man-manager Carlo Ancelotti. Vini Jr. and Mourinho appear to be on good terms at the moment, but the threat of implosion hangs over their relationship like smoke. Neither man is known for his prudence or forgiving nature.

If Mourinho aims to stabilize Madrid throughout the winter, keeping Vini Jr. on the bench in favor of Diomande feels like the easiest way to do it. In pure footballing terms, it makes sense; Diomande works better within Madrid's attacking lineup, and Vini Jr. hasn't reached his productive best during Mourinho's tenure. Plus, Vini Jr. has been open about his desire to leave Madrid altogether—if Diomande hangs onto Madrid's starting left winger position, then the club can sell Vini Jr. without regret (and hopefully use the funds to pick up a right-sided full-back so that midfielder Fede Valverde doesn't have to play there anymore).

Vini Jr. has long been Madrid's greatest asset and greatest problem. With Diomande on the rise, Madrid just might have the confidence to take Vini Jr. on directly—and have it be the best thing for the club in turn.

Madrid will return to action on Wednesday against AEK Athens in the UEFA Champions League.
